glossary
Electromagnets - usually large scale magnets for industrial use. The magnetism is created by passing an electric current through a metal coil. This means the magnetism can be easily controlled by switching the current on or off.
Energy-efficient - a term used to describe the use of minimal power, with little or no wastage, to achieve a result. Steel makers are always looking for ways to improve energy efficiency.
Energy-From-Waste - a method of harnessing the power released by burning (incinerating) rubbish.
Magnets - these attract items containing iron, cobalt or nickel. Magnets can be used to identify steel cans and because steel is made from iron, it sticks to the magnet.
Pulverisation Plant - this is where rubbish is made into powder, or fines, to reduce its volume before it is sent to landfill sites.
Waste Stream - this describes the channelling of household rubbish into a system for processing. The waste stream begins at the domestic dustbin and ends with recycling or landfill.
Waste Treatment Plant - this is the place where household rubbish is processed and prepared for recycling, for incineration or for disposal in landfill sites.
