So it's time to use the product, what do we expect from packaging?

  • packaging to be easy to open and close
  • re-sealable packaging to keep produce fresh?
  • for hazardous and medicinal items to have child proof devices
  • the produce to stay fresh for as long as possible to avoid wasting food
  • important information shown on the packaging, like cooking details, best before dates, etc..
  • being able to cook produce within the packaging - dual purpose!

Disposing of the packaging

Packaging can be compostable, recyclable, biodegradable however there are still materials that we have to dispose of in landfill.

Through this packaging journey we have seen many benefits that packaging has, for example preventing food waste both at home and in the shop and being light to transport. What we need to consider is whether these benefits out weigh the disadvantage of some materials not being recycled?

Fact: in developing countries, a lack of packaging or inadequate packaging cause between 30-50% of foodstuffs to decay before they even reach consumers.
